At Denver Zoo we enhance the lives of our animals by providing them with mental and physical stimulation to promote natural and healthy behaviors. We challenge our animal’s bodies and minds to keep them active and engaged.
Denver Zoo is one of only a few zoos in the country that has a full-time curator dedicated to our animal behavior and enrichment programs. Enrichment encourages animals to behave as they would in the wild. Our program encourages activities like digging, tracking scents, swimming, dusting, climbing, foraging and playing.

Puzzle feeders encourage our macaques to problem-solve. The primates must figure out how to manipulate the feeder to get to treats hidden inside, encouraging macaques to forage for food. This mental stimulation is important for these highly intelligent animals.

In the wild, tigers use their keen eyes and powerful sense of smell to track down prey. At the zoo keepers place unique scents inside the closed compartment of a large heavy duty scent ball used to stimulate their sense of smell and encouraging physical activity.

The zoo uses a myriad of natural enrichment items; you may even see some of these items in our exhibits. Keepers provide natural items like gourds, hollowed coconuts and essential oils. These items encourage activity and stimulate the animals mentally.
