noneOUTREACH COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP PROJECTS (ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICE-LEARNING PROGRAMS)

The Denver Zoo’s Community Leadership Program (CLP) facilitates environmental service-learning opportunities for 3rd-6th grades and high school students.


Where:    At Your Facility
Who:   3rd-6th grade students, High School students 
Classes up to 30 students, up to three classes per loan box
When:      Dates and start times vary,
                offered year round
Cost:        $375/first class, $225 each additional consecutive class. Supplemental supply cost required for Beneficial Bats and For the Birds.

 

Each class receives teacher training, one in-class content lesson with live animals, and facilitation of the project day, use of a loan box and project manual and on-going zoo support. Contact by email outreach@denverzoo.org or by phone 720-337-1634 for more information.

Things To Know:

  • If working with 3rd-6th grade students, have your students choose which project suits them best by using the Project Selection Rubric.
  • Please register at least three weeks in advance (requested dates are guaranteed upon confirmation by Denver Zoo).
  • Community Leadership Program room policies
  • Travel fees apply outside of SCFD.
  • Layover fees apply to breaks exceeding 60 minutes between programs.
  • Scholarships are available through Denver Zoo's Red Apple Fund.

  • Cancellation of Programs:
    Classes and programs canceled or rescheduled with less than two weeks notice before the scheduled program will be charged 50% of the total cost. Red Apple Scholarship awards will not apply to cancellation fees.

Water Warriors (Grade 3-6)
Science 3-5:  1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.4, 4.3, 4.5, 4.6, 5.1, 5.2
Geography 3.2, 5.1, 5.3; Reading & Writing 2

  • How does your water measure up?  Students explore and analyze water use and pollution.  Then, young leaders educate their community about water pollution by placing medallions with warning messages on storm drains in the school’s neighborhood.


For the Birds
(Grade 3-6)
Science 3-5: 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 4.3
Geography 5.1; Reading & Writing 2

  • Build birdhouses while learning about incredible bird adaptations, the wonder of migration and what is threatening these animals.  Hang your birdhouses at your school or donate them to support the Colorado Bluebird Project!


Beneficial Bats (Grade 3-6)
Science 3-5:  1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.4, 3.7
Geography 5.1; Reading & Writing 2

  • Students will go batty learning about these amazing animals!  Examine benefits and characteristics of bats while studying their conservation needs.   Then, do your part by building bat houses to hang at your school or donate to local organizations.

Water and Sustainability (Grade 9-12)

  • Empower your students to become engaged citizens and environmental stewards through a Community Leadership Program. Utilizing a series of eleven lessons and supporting resources, student gain knowledge and increase problem solving skills by better understanding water and its vital role in a sustainable lifestyle.
