EXCLUSIVE - HOME SCHOOL WORKSHOPS AT DENVER ZOO

Come discover the wonder of animals and life sciences at the Denver Zoo, in these workshops designed especially for home-schoolers and virtually-educated students.     


WINTER 2009 DATES:

December 1, 2, 3, 2009
10 am—3 pm each day

Ages 6-8
Topic: Around the World in Three Days
Students will discover the diverse ecosystems of the world and the unique and exotic animals that call them home. Live animal visitors, guided zoo tours, and caring educators make this a learning adventure they’ll never forget!

Ages 9-12
Topic: Disappearing Acts 
Older students will become the detectives on a case of endangered species, learning why animals become endangered, how it effects the environment, and what we can do to save them. Our live animal interactions, up-close & personal zoo tours, and inspiring educators bring the wonder of wildlife to your learners!

SPRING 2010 DATES:

March 2, 3, 4 2010
10 am—3 pm each day

Ages 6-8
Topic: Zoo Clues!
Students will:

  • Learn about what kinds of clues animals can leave behind that help us track them in the wild
  • Explore different tracks, scat, and leftover food to help them identify animals
  • Search for bird’s nests and try to make their own
  • Become detectives and use their animal clue knowledge to decipher some animal “crime scenes”

Ages 9-12
Topic: Wildlife Science 101
Students will:

  • Learn how a telemetry tracking system is involved in scientific research and do a telemetry search using actual tracking equipment
  • Become investigators in a variety of hands-on activities focused on tracking, skull comparisons, scat identification, and scent usage while acting as scientists
  • Using night vision goggles and bat detectors, travel to a nocturnal habitat and investigate the scene to search for clues
  • Travel to City Park and participate in a “Bio-Blitz” study of the plants, animals, and abiotic components of a study plot
