December 2009 - North Side Warehouse
The Toyota Elephant Passage exhibit will comprise 10 acres (or 12 percent) of the Zoo. Animals housed in this area have been relocated to other areas of the Zoo or to other zoos around the country. In addition to the animal collection, this area housed many Zoo operations, including waste management, grounds and horticulture, storage, hay storage, concessions storage and a bird breeding center. In preparation for construction, these important Zoo operations have been relocated. In 2007, the Zoo opened the new Bird Propagation Center as the first step in this process. We developed a new site on the north side of the zoo for many of the other displaced operations. We built a large warehouse to accommodate concessions storage and grounds and horticulture maintenance. In addition, our waste management operations and hay storage will move to this site temporarily until Toyota Elephant Passage is complete, at which time they will be relocated to the Toyota Elephant Passage site.
