wart hogs1. Front Entrance Sculptures

Twenty-two life-sized stainless steel animal sculptures were especially designed for Denver Zoo by artist Heath Satow and were installed along with the zoo’s new entry plaza in 2004. Among these sculptures dispersed in the plaza, there are six gazelles, three giraffes, three baboons, two gerenuks, a crocodile, a leopard and a lioness with her two cubs. Satow is known for his large-scale metal installations around the country. Satow has been nominated for the annual “Master” award by BTDesign Art Gallery in Italy for his works.


polar bears sculpture2. “Arctic Sojourn”

This bronze sculpture depicts a swimming polar bear and her cub and was created by Denver wildlife artist Ken Bunn in honor of beloved polar bear, Ulu, who passed away in 2000. She was the mother of famous cubs Klondike and Snow and Ulaq and Berit. This piece was installed in 1993 and is located near the entrance to Northern Shores. Bunn, a former member of the Zoo’s Board of Trustees, also has pieces on display in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming.


polar bear sculpture3. “Klondike and Snow”

This bronze tribute to famous polar bear cubs, Klondike and Snow, was created by Gerald Balciar. On Denver Zoo’s 100th anniversary, November 7, 1996, this piece was dedicated to the people of Colorado as a thank you for their century of support. Balciar is known for his life-sized depictions of animals. Balciar is also the creator of the world’s tallest marble statue.


frog and kids sculpture4. “Frog”

This bronze statue of young sisters looking at a bullfrog, created by Susan Grant Raymond, was installed in the water garden outside of Tropical Discovery in 1993 at the time of the grand opening of the building. “Frog” was donated by
Marybelle Grant, former Zoo Trustee and the mother of the sculptor.


boa sculpture5. “Sophie”

This life-size bronze sculpture of a boa constrictor was created by Tony Hochstetler who is well-known for his realistic
depictions of fish, reptiles, amphibians and birds . This piece was installed in 1993 in the entrance of Tropical Discovery.
Hochstetler is an award wining artist who has works in Wichita Art Museum, John Morris: World Wildlife Museum, Jung Museum of Bronze Sculpture and the collection of President and Mrs. George Bush.


hippo sculpture6. “Abundant Joy”

Sculpted by the same artist as “Klondike and Snow,” Gerald Balciar, this larger-than-life bronze statue of two happy hippos has been a favorite photo spot for Denver Zoo visitors since its installation in 1993. “Abudndant Joy” was a gift of the Fisher family.
eagle sculpture7. “Golden Eagle”
This bronze sculpture, located outside of Bird World, was crafted by Thomas H. Dickson and donated by the Vida F. Ellison Trust. Dickson specializes in realistic depictions of wildlife.
gorilla sculpture8. “Gorilla”

This life-size bronze of a male gorilla, sculpted by Sherry Sander, was installed in 1989 and is located outside of the outdoor gorilla exhibit in Primate Panorama. This piece was a gift to Denver Zoo from the Pauline A. and George R. Morrison Trust. Sander works exclusively in bronze and is known for her realistic depictions of wildlife.
volunteer sculpture9. “Cares For Her Brother”
This bronze sculpture of a young woman holding a lamb in her arms is a tribute to Denver Zoo’s wonderful volunteers. In 1988, this work was dedicated to one of the Zoo’s longtime volunteers, Sidonie Harris. This piece was sculpted by Veryl Goodnight and is located in front of the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep exhibit. Goodnight specializes in realistic bronzes.

10. “The Sentinel”
This larger-than-life-size bronze pronghorn, the historic symbol of Denver Zoo, was sculpted by the same artist who created “Arctic Sojourn,” Kenneth R. Bunn. This work was presented in 1977 by Mrs. Carl A. Norgren, in memory of her late husband and is located outside of the west entrance to the Gates Wildlife Conservation Education Center.
