When the opportunity came up to join our Field Conservation team at Bird\u2019s Eye Gulch near Leadville to release boreal toad tadpoles into wetland habitat, I immediately wanted to be a part of it. As someone who supports conservation initiatives through visual storytelling and communication, I rarely get the chance to see this work firsthand.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trip allowed me to deepen my understanding of a conservation program DZCA has invested in for years while capturing content that can help share these efforts with our guests, members, donors, and broader community. Seeing the work in person provided valuable context that will help me tell these stories with greater authenticity and appreciation. <\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

As a graphic designer, much of my work happens behind a computer screen. Stepping into the field offered a completely different perspective. With a camera in hand, I was able to document the people, landscapes, and moments that represent the heart of conservation work while gaining a deeper appreciation for the expertise, dedication, and collaboration required to make these programs successful.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond learning more about the boreal toad program itself, I learned more about the people behind it\u2014from Field Conservation staff and Colorado Parks and Wildlife partners to CSU students and fellow DZCA team members. Spending time alongside them highlighted how many individuals and areas of expertise come together to support a shared conservation goal. <\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was seeing the boreal toad conservation program come full circle. Learning about DZCA’s history with the program and\u00a0witnessing\u00a0tadpoles being released into habitat that may support future generations brought conservation into focus in a tangible way. Seeing the connection between the work happening in our toad barn and the efforts taking place in the field reinforced that every step\u2014from research and animal care to\u00a0monitoring\u00a0and habitat management\u2014plays\u00a0an important role\u00a0in supporting the recovery of an endangered species.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe opportunities like this are valuable for employees across the organization, regardless of department or role. While not everyone directly\u00a0participates\u00a0in fieldwork, experiences like these create a stronger understanding of the mission that connects all of us. They provide insight into the work of colleagues we may not regularly interact with and help build appreciation for the many ways individuals contribute to conservation. I left Bird\u2019s Eye Gulch with a greater understanding of the boreal toad program, a deeper appreciation for the people behind it, and a renewed sense of pride in the collective impact of our work at DZCA.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
