Today we share the final chapter in the inspiring story of Nigel, an 8-year-old tripod African painted dog, whose story of perseverance inspired our community.

For nearly nine years, Nigel was a special part of Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. Known for his playful personality, mischievous behavior and unmistakable three-legged walk, Nigel captured the hearts of his care team and guests who followed his remarkable journey.

A Special Pup From the Start

Nigel was born at DZCA on November 20, 2017, as one of four pups born to Tilly and Jesse. Alongside his brothers, Theodore Roosevelt (Teddy) and Livingstone (Dave), and sister Cholula, Nigel grew up as part of a close-knit African painted dog pack.

Named after Nigel Thornberry from The Wild Thornberrys, g </s>Nigel was always finding ways to steal food from his brothers, and despite being the smallest of the litter, he had plenty of personality.

But Nigel also faced significant health challenges early in life.

At four months old, our Veterinary Medicine team diagnosed him with severe hip dysplasia, a condition caused by a birth defect that prevented his right hip socket from developing properly. As he grew, the affected leg became increasingly difficult for him to use.

Despite physical therapy and efforts to strengthen the leg, Nigel continued to experience complications. In June 2018, our teams made the decision to amputate his right hind leg to improve his comfort and quality of life.

Just a few months later, Nigel developed additional complications involving his lower spine that affected the mobility of his remaining hind leg.

Helping Nigel Thrive

Caring for Nigel required an individualized approach and ongoing collaboration among our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams.

Our specialists worked closely with colleagues at other zoos and consulted with a wildlife veterinarian in Africa to explore ways to support his mobility and overall well-being.

With physical therapy, joint supplements and regular veterinary monitoring, Nigel adapted remarkably well to life on three legs.

His pack played an important role, too.

African painted dogs are highly social animals that form strong relationships within their packs. Nigel’s brothers were often seen looking out for him, making sure he could participate in activities and wasn’t left behind. During group feedings, they even helped ensure he got some of the best bites.

These relationships were an important part of Nigel’s life and well-being.

Specialized Care for a Special Pack

Nigel’s care continued to evolve as he grew older.

During the pack’s comprehensive wellness exams in May 2025, our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams collaborated with specialists from Colorado State University to evaluate the health of all three brothers.

These exams included CT scans, dental care, cardiovascular evaluations and thorough wellness assessments. Nigel’s lower back received special attention to ensure he continued to remain comfortable and mobile.

Coordinating veterinary care for African painted dogs requires careful planning. Their complex social structure means that even temporary separation can affect pack relationships. During the 2025 exams, the three brothers were anesthetized simultaneously, and our teams carefully coordinated their recovery to help preserve the pack’s social dynamics.

This same understanding of African painted dog behavior would become especially important during Nigel’s final weeks.

A Difficult Goodbye

In September 2026, Nigel began experiencing increasing difficulty using his remaining hind leg. Despite supportive care and anti-inflammatory pain medication, his mobility continued to decline.

Given Nigel’s previous medical challenges, the injury presented significant concerns for his comfort and quality of life.

Extended separation from the pack for treatment and recovery also posed serious risks. African painted dogs rely on complex social relationships, and removing an individual for a prolonged period can make reintroduction difficult and potentially dangerous.

After careful evaluation of Nigel’s condition, the available treatment options and his long-term well-being, our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him on October 12. Since African painted dogs’ typical lifespan is 10 – 12 years, Nigel living to just shy of his 9th birthday is truly a testament to his spirit and the dedication of his care teams.</s>

A subsequent necropsy confirmed a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament, a serious injury involving a ligament that helps stabilize the knee.

“Nigel was a forever puppy, he was spunky from the beginning and such a strong little dog that was just happy to keep up with his brothers. He was smart and knew how to get whatever he wanted. I will miss seeing his fluffy cheeks and hearing his beautiful singing voice ❤️. He overcame so much during his life, he will be very missed.”

“From the time he was a little puppy, Nigel always had the gift of influence. His charismatic personality endeared him not only to his packmates but to staff and guests. He was incredibly intelligent and could use his charm to get what he wanted in most situations; he was a bit of a rascal in that way. An old coworker called him the king maker, because whoever had Nigel on their side got to run the pack. He was impressive not only for his personality and intelligence but also for his strength and perseverance. When Nigel wanted something, there was nothing that could stop him, which I really admired about him. In the end, Nigel used his magic to position himself at the top and rule the pack himself. Nigel had a large presence, and his loss is felt deeply and has left a big hole in the pack and on our team.”

Remembering Nigel

Nigel’s story is a special example of the individualized care and dedication that goes into supporting the animals at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance.

His ability to adapt to life on three legs, remain an active member of his pack and enjoy nearly nine years surrounded by his family was made possible through the compassion and expertise of the people who cared for him.

He also helped guests better understand the unique needs of African painted dogs, an Endangered species whose social relationships and complex behaviors make them remarkable animals to care for and protect.

We are incredibly grateful to our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams for their commitment to Nigel throughout his life.

Nigel will be deeply missed by his care team and everyone who came to know and love him over the years.
