But tucked behind the scenes of our campus, a small, passionate team of Animal Care Specialists is doing some of the most important, and most specialized, bird conservation work in the country.

Welcome to the Avian Propagation Center.

What Is the Avian Propagation Center?

The Avian Propagation Center (APC) is the base of operations for DZCA’s entire Bird department. It’s where teams gather each morning, where plans are made, where new ideas are born, and where some of the Zoo’s most critical conservation work quietly takes place.

But the APC’s reach extends well beyond its walls. The facility serves as a resource for every bird at DZCA, not just the ones under the Bird department’s direct care.

At its core, the APC exists to do three things exceptionally well: breed, incubate, and hand-rear birds, particularly species that are Endangered, Vulnerable, or difficult to propagate under human care.

A Typical Day at the APC

For the team at the APC, no two days are exactly alike, but every morning begins the same way.

Woven into those morning rounds are enrichment opportunities carefully designed to keep each bird mentally stimulated and physically thriving. And behind every feeding, every health check, every cleaned enclosure is a deeper purpose: ensuring that the birds in DZCA’s care are healthy enough to serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts.

The Science of Egg Incubation

Of all the skills practiced at the APC, few are as technically demanding, or as consequential, as egg incubation. Animal Care Specialist Mike has spent 30 years mastering this craft, and he’s quick to point out that it’s far more complex than it might appear.

Once an egg arrives at the APC, it enters a carefully controlled environment of precise temperature and humidity and is monitored individually, every single day, for the duration of its incubation. That period can range from as few as 14 days to nearly 60, depending on the species. And even within a single clutch, each egg can develop differently.

Sometimes, the APC’s job ends before the hatch ever happens. Teams will incubate an egg, carefully steward it through its most vulnerable stages, and then return it to its parents, having given it the best possible chance of surviving without ever taking on the full hand-rearing process.

For Endangered and Vulnerable species like condors, swan geese, and mergansers, the stakes of this work couldn’t be higher. And the ability to double-clutch (taking one clutch into incubation while parents naturally produce a second) can effectively double the number of individuals a pair produces in a season.

Perhaps Mike’s most memorable incubation story involves condors. With an incubation period of nearly two months, the process alone is an extraordinary commitment. But the hand-rearing that followed required something even more unusual: feeding a growing condor chick while wearing a ghillie suit, hidden behind a curtain, using a puppet, all to ensure the bird never imprinted on a human and could one day return to the wild.

The Art of Hand-Rearing

When parents can’t (or won’t) raise their young, DZCA’s Bird Care team steps in. Hand-rearing means Animal Care Specialists take over the full job of raising a chick from hatch to adulthood, and the work looks different depending entirely on the species.

The reasons for hand-rearing are as varied as the species themselves. Parents may be inexperienced or unwilling. Eggs may have been abandoned. Or, for a Critically Endangered species, the team may choose to double-clutch: raising the first clutch themselves so the parents can produce a second one, effectively doubling their conservation output for the season.

For Chris, one of his proudest achievements came in 2025, when the APC team successfully hand-reared a group of four scaly-sided mergansers, an Endangered species native to China and parts of Asia whose decline is entirely attributable to human causes.

A National Resource for Avian Care

What makes DZCA’s Avian Propagation Center truly exceptional isn’t just what happens within its walls, it’s the expertise that radiates outward from them.

AZA-accredited institutions across the country regularly reach out to DZCA’s APC for guidance on incubation techniques, hand-rearing protocols, weight loss monitoring, and species-specific breeding strategies.
