🦧 Meet Jaya, our male Sumatran orangutan, who has gone through an incredible transformation over the last few years. When he arrived at DZCA in 2019, he was an unflanged male, but today, he’s proudly showing off his large cheek pads (or “flanges”), a sign of maturity in male orangutans.
With his long limbs, distinctive “billy-goat” beard and soulful eyes, Jaya is truly one-of-a-kind. While he’s more of an introvert who prefers nesting high and out of view, he also has a wonderfully silly side.
Orangutan Caring Week reminds us how special these great apes are. Stay tuned this week as we spotlight more of the incredible orangutans who call DZCA home!

🔬 Happy National Pathology Week! 🧬
We’re shining a light on one of the most impactful parts of animal care: veterinary pathology!
At DZCA, our Veterinary Pathologist studies animal health at both the macroscopic (tissue) and microscopic level to help diagnose illness, guide treatments, and improve care for every animal, from routine checkups to critical cases.
Having a Veterinary Pathologist on staff means faster answers and improved, specialized care. Recently, this helped us identify a new, and unusual infection in our lorikeet flock within hours of diagnosis, helping to prevent further illness.
DZCA collaborates with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the DZCA Education and Biofacts team, where specimens continue to support education and scientific research after an animal’s passing, contributing to global knowledge and conservation of many wildlife species, some of which are critically endangered.

Happy Orangutan Caring Week! This week was created to draw attention to the challenges that orangutans and their rainforest home face. Here at the Zoo, we’re honored to care for five Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans; Jaya, Hesty, Eirina, Cerah and Siska.
Earlier this year, we shared the news that Berani, our beloved 32-year-old Sumatran orangutan, was humanely euthanized after entering end-stage kidney failure. Berani was an incredibly special member of our animal family, and our Animal Care team have been closely monitoring the others following his passing. Cerah and Eirina were observed calling and looking for him during the first few days but otherwise ate and behaved normally. They have since fully returned to their regular routines.
Berani will be dearly missed, but we’re honored to continue providing exceptional care to the orangutans who still call DZCA home.
