Ngozi is the queen of her habitat and celebrated her big day in style with beef shanks, frozen popsicles, and some special birthday enrichment prepared by her care team. 🦴
Guests also got the chance to learn more about Ngozi and her fellow hyenas during an animal demonstration, where we shared fun facts about this often misunderstood species, from her powerful jaws to her complex social smarts.
Today Ngozi holds the title of oldest spotted hyena in any AZA-accredited zoo in the U.S.!

Our Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans and Western lowland gorillas are Kentucky Derby ready! 🦍🦧👒
Animal Care Specialist Michelle V. recently compiled a collection of our great apes engaging with enrichment items that just so happen to double as Derby-worthy “hats.” From blankets to bowls to bundles of hay, these everyday items are designed to promote mental stimulation and encourage natural behaviors.
Sometimes, enrichment ends up on their heads as they investigate or interact with it in novel ways. These moments are a great reminder that enrichment is more than play—it’s a vital part of the individualized, expert care all animals receive here at DZCA!
