We are sad to share that Keni, our 16-year-old African penguin, was humanely euthanized on June 12. Earlier this year, Animal Care staff at Pinnacol African Penguin Point observed a mass on the upper portion of Keni’s beak. She was quickly scheduled for diagnostic imaging at our Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital, where a CT scan and biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of malignant melanoma in her nasal passage.

To provide Keni with the best possible care and to ensure she was comfortable, our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine team partnered with @caseboulder. Keni’s treatment plan included radiation therapy and immunotherapy using a canine melanoma vaccine—an innovative approach tailored to her unique physiology and condition.

While Keni’s prognosis was positive throughout the initial rounds of treatment, our team noticed that she was no longer responding to treatment. For Keni`s wellbeing and comfort, the decision was made to humanely euthanize her. She passed peacefully, surrounded by the animal care team that loved and cared for her.

Keni was a beloved member of our Critically Endangered African penguin flock and will be dearly missed by all who cared and loved her over the years. 🐧 🖤

Being the host and producer of "Flightless Bird," it only made sense that they met a few flockstars in our flamingo flock, Salem our southern cassowary, our keas, lorikeets and palm cockatoos.
