Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, but love is always in the air at DZCA! From the personalized care our animals receive every day to memorable guest experiences, everything we do is rooted in a deep love for wildlife and wild places.
But when it comes to protecting species in the wild, love alone isn’t enough. Each year, we invest more than $116,000 in materials and equipment for local conservation efforts, with global conservation requiring an even greater financial commitment. So, while love itself doesn’t cost a thing, protecting wild species around the globe comes at a high price.

The tentacled snake is one of nature’s most fascinating ambush predators. Disguised as a stick and fully submerged, this aquatic snake relies on patience, precision, and a truly wild adaptation to catch its prey.
Here’s the trick: fish have specialized nerve cells called Mauthner neurons that trigger a lightning-fast escape response; if danger approaches from the left, they dart right, and vice versa. The tentacled snake takes advantage of this by holding its body in a J-shape and making a tiny body twitch. That movement activates the fish’s escape reflex… sending it swimming straight into the snake’s open mouth.
Those curious tentacles on its face? They’re packed with sensory cells that help the snake detect vibrations and movement in murky water, making this hunter incredibly effective even without great eyesight. A master of deception, the tentacled snake proves that sometimes the smartest move is letting your prey do the work for you.
