Spring Safari Schedule 2020

Call of the Wild - Day 1

March 24 & 31

Communication is just as important for Denver Zoo’s smallest residents as it is for our largest! Campers explore exactly what animals can tell each other (and us!). How do sights, scents, and sounds call attention to predators or their prey? And how can animals use this to avoid becoming lunch?

Question of the Day

AM: How does Bugsy the otter play? PM: How would you change Bugsy’s home to let him play more?

Zoo Exploration

Tropical Discovery.  Look for clues about amphibians!  Are any animals trying to communicate?  How can you tell?  What helps some amphibians communicate?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom?  How was each animal that we met different?  Which one did we like the best?

Engineering Challenge

Campers design an amphibian that wants another creature to think it’s poisonous. What tells us it is poisonous?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon?  How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Taking It Home

How do animals in our house communicate with their actions or bodies? How could this help them to survive?

Question of the Day

AM: How do animals use their sense of touch to communicate?  PM: Why do animals groom each other??

Zoo Exploration

Primate Panorama.  Look for monkeys and apes using their sense of touch.  What did we see them doing?  What do they do that is similar to what humans do?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom?  How was each animal that we met different?  Which one did we like the best?

Engineering Challenge

Campers design a new type of enclosure that encourages more communication through touch.  How do our new enclosures work?  How do they encourage touch?  Why is that a good thing?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon?  How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Taking It Home

How do animals at home communicate with their bodies or actions? Do any of them groom themselves or others?

Question of the Day

AM: What is the best noise to make in a rainforest in order for other animals to find you? PM: Can you create a noise that helps others find you in a rainforest?

Zoo Exploration

Primate Panorama.  Look for clues about monkey and ape calls. What did we hear?  Were the noises you heard, if any?  How could that help animals be found?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom?  How was each animal that we met different?  Which one could we hear and what sound did they make?

Engineering Challenge

Campers design a noise of series of noises that will help them be heard in a noisy rainforest. What noise did you come up with?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon?  How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Taking It Home

What noises do we hear animals making in our neighborhoods?  Do they need to make the same types of noises as animals in the rainforest? Why or why not?
