Call of the Wild-Day 3

March 26 & April 2

Communication is just as important for Denver Zoo’s smallest residents as it is for our largest! Campers explore exactly what animals can tell each other (and us!). How do sights, scents, and sounds call attention to predators or their prey? And how can animals use this to avoid becoming lunch?

Question of the Day

AM: How do reptiles communicate? PM: Can you create a reptile that is telling other animals to “stay away!”

Zoo Exploration

Tropical Discovery.  Look for clues about reptiles and how they communicate.  How do reptiles use body language or defenses to warn away predators?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom?  How was each animal that we met different? Were they communicating anything to other animals?

Engineering Challenge

Campers design and build a reptile that is telling other animals to “stay away!” How is it communicating that message?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon?  How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Taking It Home

Do any animals at home communicate similarly to the reptiles we learned about today? Why or why not?

Question of the Day

AM: How do predators and prey use their ears differently?  PM: Can you design the perfect land or water predator? How will its hearing help it?

Zoo Exploration

Explore large prey animals such as Okapis, Giraffes, Zebras, African Ranges, and/or Toyota Elephant Passage. How do the ears on these animals look?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet close-up?  How was each animal that we met different?  What did their ears look like? How did their ears help them?

Engineering Challenge

Campers design the perfect land or water predator. How does its hearing help it?

Further Exploration

What areas did we explore in the afternoon?  How did this help us learn about animals and their ears? Were they land or water predators?

Taking It Home

How do animals at our home use their ears?

Question of the Day

AM: What are some ways we can explore the plants and animals around us?  PM: How can observations help us learn about plants and animals?

Zoo Exploration

Explore outdoors and through zoo. How can we make observations to investigate nature and animal exhibits?

Animal Experience

What animal(s) did we meet in our classroom?  How was each animal that we met different?  What observations did we make? How did that help us learn about the animal(s)?

Engineering Challenge

Campers find something that nature has engineered and then build something in a similar or opposite way. What nature were you basing your creation off of? How is it similar or opposite?

Further Exploration

What areas of the zoo did we explore in the afternoon?  How did this help us better understand/apply the Question of the Day?

Taking It Home

Is there any nature at your house? What can you observe and learn about it? Did you learn something new by exploring the plants and animals around/in your home?

Reminders

  • Please review IMPORTANT INFORMATION, as well as our Policies and Procedures, to ensure you and your child are ready for camp.
  • Campers must bring a lunch, water bottle, and dress for the weather (plus lots of walking!). As most animal exhibits are outside, we WILL go outside every day.
  • A photo ID is required every day at pick up. Please notify the staff ahead of time if someone who is not on the authorized pick-up list will be picking up your child.
