Remembering Rudy

We said goodbye to Rudy, our beloved 32-year-old black rhinoceros, on Tuesday, May 26.

We are heartbroken to share that Rudy, our beloved 32-year-old black rhino, was humanely euthanized on Tuesday, May 26. Earlier this month, we shared that Rudy entered end-of-life care as his age-related mobility challenges and chronic health conditions continued to progress, including Iron Overload Disorder, a condition that can impact vital organs and overall immune health.

Despite the efforts of his dedicated Animal Care and Health teams and the additional support measures put in place to keep him comfortable, his quality of life continued to decline.

As difficult as this decision was, our teams remained guided by our commitment to animal wellbeing. We never want an animal’s last day to be their worst, and together, Rudy’s care team made the compassionate decision to humanely euthanize him to honor that goal. He passed peacefully, surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. A postmortem exam will help us better understand the factors that contributed to his decline and contribute to the continued scientific knowledge that supports black rhino care and conservation worldwide.

Throughout his final weeks, Rudy showed incredible resilience and trust. He voluntarily participated in many aspects of his healthcare—including blood draws to help monitor his IOD—reflecting the deep bond he shared with his team after nearly 10 years at DZCA. Our Animal Care and Health teams worked diligently to adjust treatments and closely monitor several quality-of-life indicators, ensuring his final chapter was filled with comfort, dignity and love.

A Beloved Black Rhino

Like all animal passings, this is incredibly difficult for those who worked directly with Rudy. Members of his Animal Care teams shared what working with Rudy has meant to them over the years.

“Rudy is the air that I breathe and the heart in my chest. I live to watch him lumber his way over to me every morning, not even looking for a snack, but my attention. Feeling his warm breath huff out of his nostrils on my face as he greets me with a sniff. Watching him tilt his head towards me hoping for a scratch behind the ear. Loving the mornings when he wants to play, and he runs around following me back and forth in the demo yard. It’s our job to give our animals the best life possible, all the way up to the end, even if that means knowing when to say goodbye. It is a privilege to know and love Rudy, and he has changed my heart forever.”

“Rudy has been the center of the pachyderm team for years since his arrival. I feel overwhelmingly privileged to have worked with such a curious, kind and loving creature. He was more than a rhino in my care but my friend, confidante, my reason for coming in every single day and giving my best because he deserved nothing less.”

Rudy was special, not just because he was perfect, charming, charismatic, and incredibly handsome, rhino. Special because he touched the lives of so many, many who felt that special something just from seeing him, meeting him, and in my case the immense privilege of being able to care for him.

At 32, soon to be 33, he was one of the oldest black rhinos in human care. That long and well lived life was filled with many watermelons, countless rubdowns, runs in the yard, and being an ambassador for his species so people can educate themselves about rhinos and conservation.

The time I spent with him over the years would’ve never been enough, but much more than most got and that’s an honor I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Our hearts are beyond heavy, but they are also overflowing with love for such a special guy who will be missed every day.

“Rudy was one of those animals who immediately made staff and guests fall in love with him, and it’s easy to see why. One of my favorite things about Rudy was when he would be in the stall next to you while you were inside cleaning, and he would come over to you at the railing and lean against it soliciting for rubs. He didn’t want food, he just wanted your love and attention. Other times he would come over to you, wiggle his ears and gently shake his head, and this meant he wanted to play! Running around the habitat alongside a 3,000-pound rhino while he got the zoomies was such a special way to bond, and it always brightened my day. I often joked that working with him was like rhino therapy, because even if you were having a tough day, spending time with him would always cheer you up.

Rudy inspired a countless amount of people during his lifetime and I am beyond thankful to have been part of his care team, he will be missed more than words can describe.”

“Rudy has fueled my passion for rhino care and conservation. Over the past 10 years at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, he taught me patience, resilience, courage, adaptability, and responsibility. He reminded me of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the little things, and being fully present in the moment. I feel incredibly honored to have been part of his care and deeply grateful for the special bond we shared. I’m going to miss him more than words can express.”

“Rudy was one of those animals you meet once in a lifetime. Put simply, he was one of the sweetest, most tender spirits I’ve encountered in my career. It’s hard to adequately put into words how much I’ve needed Rudy’s calming presence in my life. On days when my body and mind were going a million miles an hour, he had a way of reminding me to slow down to enjoy the precious moments amidst the craziness.

What I’ll miss the most are the times I would give him access to his indoor stalls at the end of the day, and he would choose to come over to lean against the demo yard cables asking for scratches, even though he knew the rest of his diet was waiting for him inside. But that’s just the kind of guy he was. That 3,000 pound hunk o’ love made everyone feel special and consistently had a gentle, healing energy radiating out of his pores. He was a beam of golden light, a carrot connoisseur, a world champion duration farter, and a friend to everyone with a hand that was willing to rub him behind the ears. I tear up thinking about how many lives he has touched and how loved he is in our community, because he was truly a one-of-a-kind animal. How lucky we are to have known him.

Though my life has been thoroughly rocked by his absence, I will always be thankful for those quiet moments together, and will always take a second to come back into my body on the craziest of days because of the lessons he has taught me. I thank you and love you forever, Rudy the Reasonable.”

Rudy’s Lasting Legacy

Rudisha, fondly known as Rudy, was born at Sedgwick County Zoo in 1993. He moved to Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance in 2016 from Oklahoma City Zoo to retire from an Association of Zoos and Aquariums breeding recommendation and enjoy his golden bachelor years with us. Over that time, his curious personality and strong connections with staff, volunteers and guests have made him an important part of the DZCA family and a fan-favorite among our community. Whether he was resting in the shade of his habitat, expertly shaping and styling his horn to his liking, playfully jogging alongside his care team or leaning in for scratches behind is soft rhino ears, Rudy shaped our community in immeasurable ways.

Rudy’s impact extends far beyond our campus. Throughout his time at DZCA, he also voluntarily participated in numerous AZA research studies focused on improving rhino wellbeing and care. Through those contributions, Rudy’s legacy will continue far beyond Denver, helping advance the knowledge, veterinary care and wellbeing practices that support black rhinos in human care and conservation efforts around the world for years to come.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in Rudy’s care and wellbeing throughout his life, and especially to the Animal Care and Health teams who supported him through his final chapter with extraordinary compassion, dedication and love. Many of us had the privilege of knowing Rudy in different ways, but all of us benefited from his calm and steady presence.
