Training Tomorrow’s Wildlife Veterinarians

In partnership with CSU, DZCA is helping shape the next generation of Board-Certified Specialists in Zoological Medicine™.

World Veterinary Day is celebrated on June 18 as a chance to highlight incredible veterinary professionals who dedicate their lives to the health and wellbeing of animals, including our own outstanding team here at DZCA.

We’re thrilled to announce that Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, in partnership with the CSU Veterinary Health System, has launched a new three-year Zoological Medicine Residency Program!

Our two incredible residents of this program, Dr. Kiran Fong and Dr. Kelley Sharp, have successfully completed their first year. Dr. Fong, who is focusing on zoological companion animal medicine, finished her one year at DZCA and will spend the next two years with the Avian, Exotics & Zoological care team at CSU, while Dr. Sharp, who is focusing on zoo animal medicine, finished her time at CSU and will be with us at the Zoo for the next two years of the program.

Zoological Medicine is the specialty discipline of veterinary medicine focused on the care of zoo animals, free-ranging wildlife, aquatic animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and exotic pets. Just like physicians, veterinarians complete residency programs to become board-certified specialists, and our program will emphasize clinical zoological medicine, applied research, and professional development through rotations at both DZCA and the CSU Veterinary Hospital.

The program has been officially approved by the American College of Zoological Medicine, with mentorship from our own Dr. Jimmy Johnson, Dr. Jenn Hausmann, Dr. Spencer Kehoe, and Dr. Dan Cutler, all Diplomates of the ACZM. This program is also supported by Dr. Sushan Han, DZCA’s Board-Certified Veterinary Pathologist.

This is what Saving Wildlife Together looks like: investing in the next generation of zoological medicine leaders, advancing animal care, and furthering the science that protects wildlife everywhere.
