Last week’s snowstorm created plenty of cleanup work across campus, but thanks to an amazing effort from our Arbor and Horticulture teams, much of the fallen tree material found a second life supporting the animals at DZCA.
After running the numbers, teams processed nearly 2.5 tons (roughly 5,500 pounds) of animal-usable material from storm damage, including about 900 kilograms (about 1,980 pounds) of browse, which is the heavily leafed branches enjoyed by many of the animals in our care.
The recovered material is now being used in a variety of ways across the Zoo, including chew sticks for dental health and enrichment for species like elephants, equids, porcupines, capybaras and hoofstock. Branches and foliage are also being used for bird perching, nesting material for Tundra and plenty of shredding fun for our lorikeets.
We were fortunate that much of the storm damage came from non-toxic, animal-safe tree species, allowing teams to safely repurpose an incredible amount of material. And with additional branches continuing to come down in the days after the storm, our teams expect to keep the browse buffet stocked for the week ahead. ❄️🌿
This Saturday, join DZCA and Denver Parks and Recreation in celebrating National River Cleanup Day! 🌊
On May 16 from 9a.m.–11a.m., we`re heading to Bear Creek in the Bear Valley neighborhood of Southwest Denver to remove litter, protect local waterways, and help wildlife thrive. 🦆🌿
Then stick around for a live animal demo from our Animal Ambassadors from 11:30a.m.–1p.m.! 🐾
Spots are limited! Register now through Denver Parks and Recreation through the link in bio!

Last week, we were honored to welcome Dr. Christophe Ntakirutimana and Bernard Ndayisaba of the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA) to Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, alongside our own Dr. Lynn Von Hagen, Africa Conservation Program Director at DZCA.
Together, they gathered to discuss one of conservation`s most complex challenges: human-crane coexistence, and the collaborative research DZCA and RWCA are developing together in Rwanda. 🌍
RWCA`s work centers on the African grey crowned crane, a regal species that once faced an 80% population decline. By reducing the illegal pet trade and employing local Community Conservation Champions to help with monitoring, RWCA has been turning the tide for this remarkable bird and the megafauna that share its landscape.
This visit is the latest chapter in a growing partnership that reflects our shared commitment to wildlife conservation in Africa and beyond. We are deeply grateful for the dedication and expertise that Dr. Christophe, Bernard, and the entire RWCA team bring to this work every day.

🏃♀️ Sunday is almost here, it’s time to lace up your shoes, Colfax runners!
Our very own Animal Care Specialist and Colfax Ambassador, Jen Hickman, will be right there with you on race day running her 10th Colfax race. 💪
And while you`ve been logging miles, our animals have been putting in work too. Treadmills, running wheels, climbing, and jumping to keep up their own physical health. Consistency looks a little different for everyone around here.
The Colfax Half Marathon is officially SOLD OUT, but we have one bib to give away to a lucky winner! Comment which animal you’re most looking forward to running by during the race and one random winner will be selected on Wednesday, May 13 at 9 a.m.
Good luck to every runner this weekend! We`ll be cheering you on, and we can`t wait to see you at the Zoo after you cross that finish line.
