Colorado`s oldest conservation bison herd is making history again. π¦¬
This summer, DZCA and Denver Mountain Parks are expanding the Daniels Park bison herd onto grasslands they haven`t roamed in over 150 years.
This springEarlier this year, our teams fitted the herd with GPS collars and solar ear tags giving us real-time data on their movements as they explore new habitat on the Highlands Ranch Backcountry Wilderness Area and helping us protect one of the largest untilled prairie ecosystems on Colorado`s Front Range.
βConservation is a team sport. It`s as much about the people caring as it is about the animals and the environment.β β Dr. Jimmy Johnson, Senior Director of Wildlife Health and Conservation
For generations, these bison have helped restore herds across Colorado and the United States. Now it`s our turn to make sure they have the space to thrive for generations to come.

We can`t believe our lion cubs are turning ONE this month! Guion, Alpine Lily, Poppy and Olive have grown rapidly in the last year and it`s been an honor to watch them develop while providing everything they need to thrive at DZCA. π§‘π¦π₯°
On August 13, you can help us celebrate our their first birthday! Join us for Animal Care team talks, special enrichment, music and memorable moments throughout the day that highlight these incredible cubs. Learn more by visiting the link in our bio.
π¦ Happy #OwlAwarenessDay! And who better to celebrate with than Luna, our eastern screech owl and resident Animal Ambassador?
Don`t let her small size fool you. Eastern screech owls are some of nature`s most effective hunters. Silent flight, razor-sharp instincts, and the ability to rotate their heads up to 270 degrees make them perfectly built for nighttime pest control. π
This is also a good reminder that owls face real threats. From climate change to outdoor cats, which can pose a significant risk to raptors and birds of all kinds.
Happy #CloudedLeopardDay from Taji and Jean! π
Taji and Jean have a breeding recommendation through the AZA Species Survival Plan and our Animal Care team is taking things one careful step at a time.
The two are currently working through howdy introductions where the cats can see, smell, and interact with each other through a mesh barrier before any physical introduction takes place. Very few institutions have successfully introduced unknown adult clouded leopards, so our team is following Taji and Jean`s lead, monitoring their behavior closely and letting them set the pace.
Come see if you can spot Taji or Jean on your next visit! π
