Meet the new bird on the block! Earlier this year, we welcomed a male, three-year-old Himalayan monal to our Forest Aviary!
This stunning pheasant species is new to DZCA, and based on his beautiful plumage, he has been named Picasso by his Animal Care team.
These birds are native to Asia including Afganistan, Bhutan, northeastern India, southern Tibet and Myanmar and are highly expressive. They use a mix of body displays and vocalizations to communicate everything from courtship interest to contentment, aggression and more.
Picasso is settling in nicely and can often be seen foraging for food or interacting with other birds in his multi-species habitat. Be sure to say hello on your next visit to Forest Aviary! 💙

You might not think you have much in common with a Critically Endangered African penguin, but Steppy, who lives at Pinnacol African Penguin Point, shares something special with a young visitor named Kinsley.
Both were diagnosed with heart murmurs when they babies, but thanks to the dedicated care they received, they’re now happy and healthy! In this latest edition of Wild Milestones, presented by Children`s Hospital Colorado, we follow Kinsley’s visit to meet Steppy and learn how both received expert care and support on their journey to good health.
With the love from the compassionate teams at DZCA and @childrencolo, Kinsley and Steppy are both living their best lives. Check out the the video to hear their stories! 💛🐧
