From all of us at DZCA, Happy New Year! Thank you for a wild 2025 and we can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store 💚
We are deeply saddened to share an update on Winnie’s pregnancy. Winnie, our seven-year-old Southern tamandua, was expected to give birth in late January. However, her baby was born around three weeks premature on December 27.

Our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams immediately jumped into action and worked tirelessly over the weekend to try to stabilize the baby. Despite their best efforts, the pup sadly passed away on December 28.

Winnie’s voluntary participation in her pregnancy care, along with her adorable pregnancy announcement, delighted tamandua fans near and far. We know many people including our staff, volunteers, members and guests were closely following this highly anticipated pregnancy for first-time parents Winnie and Santiago and the first tamandua birth at DZCA in over a decade. This outcome was unexpected and has been a hard loss for our teams.

Winnie is currently doing well, and her care team will continue to closely monitor her health and well-being in the days ahead.

Thank you for keeping our dedicated teams in your thoughts during this difficult time.
